Botox consists of highly purified botulinum toxin type A. This substance blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to skeletal muscle, thereby weakening the muscle. The effect is temporary, lasting three to five months. Botulinum toxin occurs in nature (it is a substance made by bacteria, but is not actually itself bacterial - that is, it is not "infective"). The Botox product is manufactured synthetically.
Additional Wrinkle Information
Is it a poison?
No. It is a medication, and like many medications, there is a safe dose and (theoretically) an unsafe dose. People sometimes get a little confused by the word “toxin”, but this is an extremely safe product when used correctly by trained medical practitioners.
How does it actually work?
Botox works by relaxing the muscles which produce facial wrinkles. The muscles relax completely, and therefore the skin is not pulled into wrinkles in that area.
Which wrinkles can be treated?
There are three main areas which can be treated, separately or together: the "frown area" between the eyebrows, the horizontal 'surprise lines" of the forehead, and the "crow's feet" at the outer corners of the eyes. All of these areas are very successfully treated with Botox, although very deep lines may not disappear altogether. Other areas which can be treated include "popply chin", "bunny lines" on the sides of the nose, and various other areas. These treatments are not always successful. Combining frown line and crow’s feet treatments will also give a slight browlift, called the "Botox Browlift".
Why has it become so popular recently?
Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments at our clinic and throughout the world. This is because (a) it really works, (b) it is very safe and (c) it is relatively inexpensive. Many Hollywood stars use Botox as well as ordinary Australians from all walks of life, male and female.
The anti-wrinkle effect of Botox was discovered in the early 90s. It took a few years for the treatment to become widely known. One of the manufacturers, Allergan, received approval from the USA Federal Drugs Administration for frown line treatment with Botox in early 2002. Other manufacturers now also produce botulinum toxin A. The treatment's popularity has skyrocketed since then.
How long does the effect last?
Usually between three and five months. Some patients find that, if they continue to have repeat treatments, they get a slightly longer lasting effect each time - up to about six months - but this does not always happen.
Does the doctor perform the treatment?
Yes. Dr Liebenberg never delegates Botox treatment to other staff. While it is relatively easy to get an "ok" result, the best results can only be obtained reliably by a practitioner with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, combined with a thorough appreciation of human facial aesthetics. This is why Botox is usually performed by cosmetic surgeons and cosmetic physicians.
Can you guarantee that it will work?
If the degree of muscle relaxation obtained is not satisfactory after two weeks, we will repeat or top up the treatment at no cost to you.
Remember that not all wrinkles disappear completely. If you are not happy at two weeks, Dr Liebenberg will assess you. If he thinks a further dose will be of any benefit, he will administer this free of charge.
